Why? Through Your Lens!

***A bit of blogkeeping: While I’m off on my honeymoon, I’ve lined up some fabulous Cleveland bloggers to give new Why CLE? perspectives. Today we have Katrina from Bite Buff, telling us about one of her favorite hobbies. I love that we had a photographer blogging about food on Wednesday and now a foodie blogging about photography! Thanks, Katrina!***

Hi everyone, I’m Katrina from the blog Bite Buff where I share my adventures in dining around the Cleveland area. I just moved here four years ago from Upstate NY, and I’ve had fun making Cleveland “home”. Today, I wanted to share with you one of the ways that I’ve explored our city…through my camera lens.

Photography has always been a hobby. I started young, and filled photo albums with pictures of my life through the years. But, it wasn’t until last summer that I finally bought myself a Canon EOS Rebel T2i.

Immediately, I dragged “R” to one of our favorite Cleveland spots to visit- the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

We have a zoo membership (our Individual Plus package is only $57 a year), and often find ourselves wandering around the zoo and Rainforest on the weekends. I swear we see a new animal every time we visit.

Then I started dreaming of other outings involving my camera. I had heard about the new gnome art installation at the Holden Arboretum last summer. Garden gnomes make me laugh, and these were 5 feet tall and each inspired by a different influence.  I knew it was going to be good. We had so much fun tracking all of the different gnomes that were scattered throughout the main gardens at the Arboretum. Here is just one of my favorites, the John Lennon.

Our last photography stop this fall was the Cleveland Botanical Gardens for their annual Orchid Mania exhibit.

If you have never been to see this special exhibit, don’t miss it this year! The orchids are simply gorgeous, and I had no idea that there are so many different types, colors, and shapes.

But where do I go from here? I found the perfect next step to exploring our city through my lens. In celebration of the organization’s 125th Anniversary, the Cleveland Photographic Society is hosting a Photo Scavenger Hunt from now until November 4th. It is free to join, and they will post 125 different photographs in batches on the website. Individuals, or teams up to four, explore Downtown Cleveland and try and recreate the posted images. To help people get started, they are offering field trips throughout the summer where people can get together and hunt as a group. There are valuable prizes and incentives along the way, but I truly just wanted to tackle the challenge of finding these hidden spots in downtown. My friend and I are heading out for the first time this weekend, and I can’t wait!

  1. My brother is a photographer too (as a hobby), and he often visits the Holden Arboretum. He’s taken a lot of really wonderful photos there. I’m definitely going to pass on the info for the photo scavenger hunt. Thanks for posting this!

  2. Great post!

I have a bad habit of collecting garden gnomes….I want that gnome in the photo!

Any recommendations on cameras, let me know. I really need to upgrade from what I have.
