Why? Weekends!

***A bit of blogkeeping: Today is your last chance to enter to win two tickets to the Great Big Home and Garden Show. Remember, you can tweet daily for more entries. Check it out.

Also, wishing the happiest of birthdays to my grad school bestie, who comments here as “PLP.” Love you, lady! Wish we could celebrate in person!***

We didn’t let the cold and snow keep us in this weekend! On Friday night, Matthew and I met up with Nathan and Lane to warm up with some margaritas and spicy food at Lopez Southwest Kitchen.

IMG_5255We started out with a pitcher of the Lopez traditional margaritas (mine has the spicy salt rim) and an order of the Iron Chef guacamole, with bacon, bleu cheese, and sage.

For our entrees, I chose the Mezcal chicken special and Matthew had the Buenos Dias burrito, with egg, house-made chorizo, and roasted peppers.

The chicken was roasted and served with red mole sauce, roasted corn pudding, and arugula salad with pork belly. The roasted corn pudding had jalapenos and was creamy, spicy deliciousness. The chicken was moist and the sauce had just the right smoky spice. While I loved the salad, it was a bit much and didn’t really fit with the rest of the entree.

For dessert, both couples split the Mexican hot chocolate.

IMG_5254Decadent dark chocolate lava cake, with cinnamon and chile spice, is topped with vanilla bean ice cream, strawberries, and a brown sugar cookie. This is one tasty and rich dessert! We had a great night catching up with friends and left with full bellies and big smiles.

Saturday, Harmony Yoga celebrated their fifth anniversary in business with a day of free 45-minute yoga classes.

I like having this reminder during class!

In the morning, I practiced the Foundations of Yoga class with my friend Katie, who is relatively new to yoga. Then, in the afternoon, I headed back for a Power Vinyasa class with Matthew, who is one heck of a good yogi.

After class, we stuck around for some light refreshments, chit-chat with classmates, and shopping. I picked up a bottle of lavender-scented yoga mat spray made locally by Terra Verde Handmade (and recognized in Cleveland Magazine as the best yoga mat spray in Cleveland).

Saturday evening, it was time to celebrate Julie‘s birthday with some adult beverages at Press Wine Bar. It seemed perfect to fete one of my favorite new friends in one of my favorite new spots.

We ate and drank in the event space in the back of the restaurant, which gave us plenty of room to spread out and be a little rowdy. My obsession with Press’ flatbreads was heightened with my choice of the duck sausage flatbread.

Duck sausage, brie, cranberries, white bean puree, and orange and ginger gastrique combined into a very delicious meal. Matthew had the crab burger, which was quite tasty and packed with crab meat. We also discovered the ROOBREW Winter Milk Chocolate Stout off Press’ all-local craft beer draft list. Brewed in Akron, this beer is mostly chocolate, with just a hint of mint on the finish.

It was a fun (and tasty) evening celebrating a great gal! Julie was a great hostess and made her friends from all different parts of her life feel welcome. I hope she enjoyed her party as much as we did!

Sunday was a low-key day, with a little yoga, a little craft beer drinking, and a little gumbo making (more on that later in the week). How was your weekend? Did you brave the cold or hibernate?
