Why? Blogiversary!

***A bit of blogkeeping: Congratulations to Megan (Comment #9), randomly-selected winner of an admission to one of the December Balance & Brews events. Please check your email for details. If you didn’t win, you can still register for the December events online.***

So, dear reader, here we are again at another blogiversary! I cannot believe it’s been 4 years of writing Why CLE?. I was kicking around a lot of ideas of what I wanted to say for this year’s blogiversary. As always, I am so grateful to all of you for reading; for creating a space where I feel I can share so much of my life; and for continuing to make this a truly fun endeavor.

One of the best parts about blogging, to me, has been the connections with amazing people doing amazing things in Cleveland. I’m truly lucky to know some great makers and creators and I love the opportunity to give voice to their talents whenever I can. These people are using their time, energy, and talent to put things out in the community that are uniquely them and Cleveland is the richer for it.

Those of you who have read for awhile know that I do a giveaway on my blogiversary. This year, I wanted to focus the giveaway around some of these local makers/creators that I know and love. One lucky reader will take home each of the items listed below:

Maker: Lane Baldwin of Lane Baldwin Photography

Why she’s great: Lane is a wonderful photographer, whose photo-journalistic style has captured some great moments in my life and continues to take my breath away whenever I peruse her blog. Cleveland is her adopted home and she and her husband have truly embraced it, learning a lot about and showing her love for the city through the places she takes photographs. Plus, she’s one of the sweetest people you’ll ever meet – you can’t help but smile at her! Oh, and she also recently added on a super fun Photobooth option to her services that she offers!

The giveaway: $25 off a photo shoot with Lane Baldwin Photography, donated by Lane Baldwin Photography

Maker: Clark Pope of Pope’s Kitchen

Why he’s great: Clark turned a side business into a thriving career because he took a leap of faith and followed his heart (like other makers on this list). His food is legit tasty and there is no one more passionate about supporting other local makers, which shows the true spirit of Cleveland and the maker community especially.

The giveaway: A bottle of Pope’s Kitchen’s Bloody Mary Mix, named to the Best of Cleveland list in 2014

Maker: Alicia Hansen of Evolution Yoga

Why she’s great: A lot of you know Alicia from her own blog or from her event planning days. While she’s fabulous at both those things, she heard the call to make teaching yoga the main focus of her career and, what’s even better, she listened to that call. Seeing her so in her element is a wonderful thing, plus she’ll give you a great workout and make your soul feel just as good as your body after her class. And she gives the best hugs ever, if hugging your yoga teacher is your thing.

The giveaway: A gift card for one class at Evolution Yoga (good for any class with any teacher, although I hope you’ll take Alicia’s class)

Maker: Dave Sabol of Told

Why he’s great: Dave started Told with the premise that everyone has a story to tell. Told is a communal storytelling evening that brings Clevelanders together and provides them with a unique forum to share their voices. Told events are fun, engaging, and a great chance to get to know someone new, as well as get to know yourself. And it all happens because Dave decided to start it.

The giveaway: Told events are free to attend and held at Market Garden Brewery, so a $25 gift card to Market Garden will hopefully give you even more incentive to attend

Maker: Melissa Klimo-Major of Terra Verde Handmade and Balance & Brews

Why she’s great: Maybe it’s a yogi thing (see: Alicia), but Melissa recognized where her talents and her passions intersected and created two awesome local businesses out of it. Her Terra Verde products are fabulous and her Balance & Brews events are capitalizing on the great trend of taking yoga out of the studio and into real world spaces.

The giveaway: A Cleveland Gray soap bar and Calm Balm

How to enter:

This is really simple. You don’t need to follow anyone or tweet anything. You can comment on either or both of the following (if you do both, please leave separate comments):

1. Tell me the name of a local maker you know and love. I want ideas of more people to go out and meet (and blog about) in the next year of Why CLE?.

2. Tell me which of these prizes you’re most excited about (even though you win them all).

The giveaway will close on Wednesday, December 17 at 11:59pm and the winner will be announced the following day. Good luck!

Again, thanks for an awesome four years and for evolving with me through a lot of life changes. I’m excited for what the next year will bring!

I absolutely love Meilio from That’s Nut’s at 17114 Detroit Rd – he has so many different flavored nut butter!! My favorite nut butter is the Chocolate Coconut Almond 🙂 He also has a lot of delicious baked goods and vegan baked goods!

All the prizes are absolutely awesome! The prize I am most excited for is the one class pass to Evolution Yoga! I see post from Alicia and would love to try her class!

The Olive and the Grape in Mentor! The owner takes the time to explain products and ingredients for those with specific dietary needs. Her olive oils and vinegars are delicious — who needs salad dressing! We have replaced thigh sodium ingredients with heart healthier option that bring flavor to many recipes! #shoplocal #landthatilove

My favorite place in downtown Willoughby is the Gourmet Soap Market. It’s wonderful. Everything is made with natural ingredients, and it all smells and looks amazing. The owner’s name is Barbie, and the outside of the building is pink. =)

I would love to try Terra Verde soaps. Love supporting local and using natural products. One idea to explore is local coffee shops like Open Door Coffee Company. Their coffee is fair trade and some of their profits support the Coffee Kids Mission.

Fear’s Confection in Lakewood. Her chocolates are painfully delicious – as in you could eat a whole bag. I bought one of her “Mother’s Day” special which was espresso infused chocolate-covered caramels in a coffee mug. I decided mom wouldn’t notice if I tried one. One turned into the whole bag and I had to by my mom another Mother’s Day gift! She also makes a “nerd” line of Dr. Who chocolates well!

  8. I would love to win this give away. I need an updated family picture:
