On Saturday, despite it not feeling like BBQ weather, Matthew and I got to enjoy some fabulous BBQ at the Ultimate BBQ Throwdown at Sterle’s Country House. The line-up included chefs from Fat Casual BBQ, Saucisson, and Ohio City Provisions.
Each chef prepared a main meat dish and a side dish, which were presented anonymously to the judges and attendees for voting. The prizes, aside from chef glory, included fabulous items like a bacon bowl kit, BBQ sauce, and a handmade macaroni necklace.
From the start, you could tell this was an event for the chefs to not only flex their culinary muscle, but also have fun with each other. I have always loved how collegial our Cleveland chef community is and that was certainly on display at the BBQ Throwdown.
The judges for the BBQ Throwdown included food writer Doug Trattner, Chef Brian Okin, and, somehow, me.
So, here’s what we got to enjoy: beef rib and banana pudding from Fat Casual BBQ; beef brisket and cornbread with greens from Ohio City Provisions; and “McRib” with peach BBQ sauce and potato salad from Saucisson.
There were sauces and other condiments available to add to your plate, but for me, the meat dishes needed no additions.
There was an impressive smoker working away in the Sterle’s beer garden and the meat from all of the chefs was tender, flavorful, and delicious!
The winners of both the judges’ and people’s votes for the meat dish were the chefs from Fat Casual BBQ. The beef rib had incredible flavor, a delicious crispy crust, and just the right amount of fat that melted into the meat.
Both the judges and the guests chose Saucisson’s tasty potato salad as the side dish of choice. It was a fun night of good food and chef camaraderie. Cheers to the first BBQ Throwdown! We can’t wait for next year’s event!
***Disclosure: I was asked to be a judge for the Ultimate BBQ Throwdown. In exchange, I received one complimentary ticket to the event. Matthew’s ticket was purchased at our own cost. As always, all opinions are 100% my own.***
