Why? Tommy’s Restaurant!

There are certain restaurants that are Cleveland institutions. Tommy’s Restaurant in Coventry is definitely one of those. It’s been around since 1972 and was voted “Best Milkshake East of the Mississippi” by Rolling Stone Magazine. So, of course on my recent visit with my friend Robin, we couldn’t pass up the award-winning shakes!

I had the black raspberry chip and she had the classic chocolate. The shakes really are so delicious and there are a ton of flavors available. They’re thick and rich and I love the refill from the tin cup!

Tommy’s has a diverse menu with everything from burgers to spinach pies to pitas to lots of vegetarian and vegan options. I chose the Georgia, which has tuna, hummus, cheese, mushrooms, and tomato served in a toasted pita.

Due to the huge milkshakes and sharing an order of the tasty fries with Robin, I only ate half my sandwich, but it warmed up perfectly in the oven for leftovers.

Robin had the JJ, which has falafel, veggies, sesame sauce, cheese, and sunflower seeds in a toasted pita.

Aside from the tasty food, Tommy’s has a funky, laid-back vibe that fits perfectly with the Coventry neighborhood. This is a Cleveland institution not because the food is fancy, but because it’s really good, it offers a wide variety of options to cater to every taste and diet, and because no one can resist a great milkshake!

I don’t think I had been to Tommy’s since college, but I will definitely not wait so long for my next return trip!

I can’t even count how many chocolate malt milkshakes and turkey-and-swiss pita sandwiches I ate at Tommy’s while I was a student at CWRU in the early eighties. One of my best college memories!
