Why? Masthead Brewing!

Last night, Alicia and I grabbed a casual and yummy dinner at Masthead Brewing before heading over to the Hanna Theatre for a show. While you wouldn’t necessarily think of Masthead for a pre-show meal, it’s within a short walk or an inexpensive Uber ride to the theaters.

While I know I like Masthead’s craft beers (the Single Origin Coffee Stout and Falling Fruit are my favorites currently on tap there), I opted for a cocktail last night. I had the Bourbon Jam, with Watershed Bourbon, Grand Marnier, orange bitters, orange juice and raspberry preserves.

IMG_7459

Sweet, but not too sweet, this cocktail was right up my alley!

Alicia and I shared the new-to-the-menu Meatball Pizza, with crushed red pepper, red sauce, and fresh basil.

IMG_7443

I love Masthead’s thin-crust pies and this one is packed with traditional Italian goodness!

We also shared the Brussel Sprouts, with Ohio apples, roasted shallots, bacon, maple syrup, and apple cider vinegar. Because we felt better about devouring the pizza with some vegetables nearby.

Actual footage of me devouring the pizza

We also shared the Everything Pretzel, with pimento cheese, stadium mustard, and IPA honey mustard (my favorite of the dips.)

Then it was off to see “The Office! A Musical Parody” at the Hanna Theatre. The show was funny and light and a great tribute to the sitcom we loved.

Masthead made the perfect casual stop before this casual show. Next time you’re in the area, grab a pizza and a beer and enjoy! And Masthead is celebrating their Third Anniversary Party tomorrow, so drop in and celebrate!

Why? Playhouse Square Partners!

On Wednesday, I got to spend the evening pretending it was summer with putt-putt, margaritas, and tacos at Playhouse Square Partners‘ Putt-Putt Night.

IMG_7277

The event was held in the lobby of the KeyBank State Theatre, which not only provided a unique setting for miniature golf, but also let us start daydreaming about Jump Back Ball, which will be held there in just over a month!

We had a great time playing putt-putt and I even got two holes in one! There were also some great prizes of loge seats to various shows at Playhouse Square for those with the lowest score, as well as those who could get a hole in one on a particularly tricky hole.

Playhouse Square Partners plans lots of fun evenings like the putt-putt event, as well as our gala Jump Back Ball. We also assist Playhouse Square’s Community Engagement and Education initiatives through both fundraising and hands-on volunteering. And we get to do a lot of it in the absolutely beautiful theaters of Playhouse Square!

If that sounds like you’re speed, check out joining Playhouse Square Partners and/or join us for Jump Back Ball on Saturday, February 29. This will be my ninth Jump Back Ball and I swear they get better every year! This year’s theme is “From Jukebox to Boombox” and it’s sure to be a rockin’ evening!

Why? Weekends!

It was a fun weekend in Cleveland, as we bounced between spring and winter weather…

Disney on Ice

On Friday night, Jeffrey and I attended opening night of Disney on Ice Presents Road Trip Adventures at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

IMG_7122

Disney always puts on a fantastic show, between great costumes, fun songs, and amazing skating and acrobatics.

IMG_7149

We got to see favorites from Frozen, The Incredibles, Toy Story 4, Mary Poppins, Aladdin, The Lion King, and more.

IMG_7139

Our seats were in the “Extra Magic Zone,” so we had lots of up close time with the characters! Jeffrey’s face says it all…it was a magical show!

IMG_7132

Disney on Ice Presents Road Trip Adventures is at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse through Sunday, January 19, with shows on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Click here to purchase tickets. If you use code WHYCLE, you can save on tickets to the 7pm shows on each day.

JCU Alumni Retreat

On Saturday morning, I attended an alumni retreat at John Carroll University. I always love being back up on campus, but I find it especially conducive to reflection for me.

6215A7F8-A778-4D1C-862D-702BEB1C5936

The retreat focused on releasing things from the past year that were no longer serving us and cultivating healthy habits for the year to come. The retreat even started with an hour-long yoga flow, which you know always puts me in a great mindset!

One of the most moving parts of the retreat was when all the participants wrote down on flash paper something they wanted to release moving into 2020. We each lit the paper on fire and watched our something be released into the air.

IMG_7167

I got so much out of both our personal reflection time, as well as the group sharing that we did. Campus Ministry and the Cleveland Alumni Chapter did a fantastic job planning a meaningful morning!

Winter Wonder Cleveland

On Saturday afternoon, I made a return to Winter Wonder Cleveland, which is fun, interactive “Instagram museum” where you can play and get some great photos, too.

IMG_7207

Since I first visited Winter Wonder Cleveland, there are some new interactive elements at the Griswold House, as well as some new artwork from Platform Beer Co

IMG_7172

…and an even more in-depth mirror room.

IMG_7222

Winter Wonder Cleveland is open through Sunday, January 26. There’s so much more than just Christmas fun to experience here. Instagram museums are becoming the hot new thing and Cleveland has its own for just a bit longer, so check it out while you can. For hours and tickets, click here.

***Disclosure: I was asked to help promote Winter Wonder Cleveland. In exchange, I received complimentary admission. As always, all opinions are 100% my own.***

Phunkenship Barrel Room Yoga

On Sunday, I checked out a familiar yoga teacher (Alicia) in a new-to-me setting (Phunkenship by Platform.)

Phunkenship is Platform Beer’s dedicated sour-beer facility, which also has a very cool taproom for enjoying those sour beers. I had a The Wolf at the Door, a dark-chocolate raspberry stout.

BC5B8A21-7316-41FA-9ED4-5905A925F2CD

But before enjoying the beers, we enjoyed an hour-long vinyasa flow in Phunkenship’s barrel room.

IMG_7231

Alicia is teaching at Phunkenship on the second Sunday of every month, so check out the schedule for some savasana and sours combined! For $15, you get the hour-long class, plus a beer. The laughs are free!

So that was my weekend! How was yours?

Why? Allison Rose Foundation Yellow Brick Road Celebration!

This month, the Allison Rose Foundation will host its second annual gala event: the Yellow Brick Road Celebration.

ARF-YBR-Image

The event takes place on Saturday, January 25 at the Embassy Suites in Independence and focuses on giving guests the “courage” and “heart” to advocate for children and young adults with food allergies.

The Yellow Brick Road Celebration will raise funds to expand the Allison Rose Foundation’s educational curriculum and scholarships, create additional awareness campaigns, contribute to research and advocate for change to save lives.  A portion of the proceeds will also go to the new Cleveland Clinic Food Allergy Center of Excellence.

The event will feature hors d’oeuvres, beer, wine, raffles, and a keynote speech from Broadway star Jessica Vosk, a star of the musical “Wicked,” who will share her story of managing anaphylactic food allergies.

The Allison Rose Foundation was created after the tragic death of Allison Rose Suhy from an extreme food allergy reaction. Her parents turned that tragedy into an opportunity to help other families manage food allergies and hopefully never deal with the same sort of tragedy.

Tickets for the Yellow Brick Road Celebration are currently on sale online for $100 for those 21+ and $50 for those ages 16-21. Click here to purchase tickets and attend this inspiring night of turning tragedy into a true community effort of giving back.

Why? Dinner in the Dark!

Last week, I attended a Dinner in the Dark event at 111 Bistro. These events bring together chefs from different restaurants to create a six-course tasting meal. Each Dinner in the Dark benefits a local non-profit. December’s non-profit was The Up Side of Downs.

We started our evening with an apple cider and rye cocktail from Tom’s Foolery Distillery and an amuse bouche from 111 Bistro.

IMG_6593

As you can see, you remain “in the dark” about the menu until you are served each course, but are given picture hints. Each course is also expertly paired with wine.

Our first course was seared duck breast served over ravioli from The Corkscrew Saloon.

IMG_6595

I’ve rarely met a duck dish I didn’t like and this was no exception!

Next up was a trio of sashimi from Twiisted.

IMG_6597

Especially since I don’t get down toward Medina very often, it was nice to try so many local restaurants! This sushi was great!

Next up was a warm, comforting chutney from NEOMU.

IMG_6598

Perfect for a cold December night!

Next up were scallops with butternut squash puree and morel chips from Wolf Creek Tavern.

IMG_6600

This dish had a lot of elements, all of which went together so well!

Next was short ribs from DYNE.

IMG_6603

With a six-minute egg, Brussel sprouts, and rutabaga puree, there was not a thing on the plate I didn’t love!

Our dessert was from our host 111 Bistro: a coffee tart that was decadent and delicious!

IMG_6604

Dinner in the Dark is such a fun way to experience food from several different chefs. The next Dinner in the Dark takes place on Monday, January 13 at the Elyria Country Club. Tickets are $90 per person and are available online.

You need to be willing to be adventurous, since you won’t know the menu ahead of time, but you won’t be disappointed by the quality of the food and wine, as well as the camaraderie of the chefs. Plus, it all benefits a good cause!
