It was a busy weekend in the CLE! On Saturday, I bundled up and headed to John Carroll University – my alma mater – for Homecoming.
I was there to volunteer with the Cleveland Alumni Chapter. As part of spreading the word about the chapter and reaching out to alums, we wandered through the beer garden taking pictures of alums with cut-out heads of famous JCU sports alumni and talking to them about the Chapter.
It was a fun afternoon of getting to meet more Cleveland-area alums, along with some current JCU students. I commented that it was perfect football weather and the Blue Streaks must have thought so too: John Carroll trounced Marietta 61-14 in the game! If you’re a John Carroll alum, check out the great events coming up from the Cleveland Alumni Chapter!
On Sunday, I kept my fingers crossed that the rain would stop as Matthew and I went to the West Side Market Centennial Street Festival and Parade. We met up with Amanda and Scott to take the Rapid from Tower City to the Market to avoid the parking hassle.
In the sea of people (and there were quite a few despite the weather), we met up with Kimberly and her husband as well.
The Market was open for the first time on a Sunday in a decade. Most of the vendors were still excited from President Barack Obama’s impromptu visit on Friday and were eager to share their stories of meeting the President.
Since the weather was less than ideal, we hopped from indoor stop to indoor stop in between taking in the street festival. We started with a round of the only-at-the-brewpub Tripel Dog Dare at Great Lakes Brewing Company. Then we headed to Nano Brew for beers and burgers. It was packed with West Side Market supporters and Browns fans!
The girls all ordered Raddlers, which are a combination of flavored soda and beer. I chose the Penny-farthing, a mix of blackberry soda and Breckenridge Vanilla Porter. It was sweet and delicious! For lunch, I had the braised burger, with BBQ sauce, slow-cooked onions and whole grain mustard. Matthew had the spicy burger. While I enjoyed mine, he found his to be a bit salty.
All in all, it was a great, although chilly and damp, afternoon of taking in some of the best Ohio City has to offer!
Sunday evening brought a very unique book club experience, but you’ll just have to wait until later in the week to hear about that. You know it’s a good weekend when you split up your recaps! How was your weekend, CLE?
