Why? Yoga Outside the Studio!

More and more, yoga is asking you to unroll your mat somewhere outside a studio. And while I love a good studio flow, I also can’t help but enjoy taking my practice out and about, especially in the summer.

Over the last week, I had a chance to practice in two awesome locations with amazing views that put a great angle on my practice.

Last week, Inner Bliss Yoga Studio hosted Bliss in the Ballpark, an hour-long vinyasa yoga practice at Progressive Field.

We got to unroll our mats on the right field deck and practice facing out to the field. I may have set my intention for another World Series appearance!

After the practice, we could stay and enjoy a beer in The Corner and get to know some of the other baseball-loving yogis. I definitely find that, more than in a studio class, these out-and-about yoga classes offer the chance for fellowship and community after class. Don’t get me wrong: that happens at a studio, but it takes time to build. People tend to stick around and chat more right away at these classes.

This Monday, my dear friend Alicia taught a yoga class nearby to Luca Italian Cuisine on the Superior Viaduct.

With sweeping views of the city and Alicia’s wonderful teaching style, this is one of my favorite classes in recent memory. Alicia referenced the city and the views at the beginning, but wasn’t heavy-handed about it. She let her students find their own inspiration and meaning from the beautiful surroundings.

After class, we got to enjoy a glass of wine and appetizers at Luca Italian Cuisine. Again, everyone from the class gathered and had a chance to get to know each other better.

The yoga justifies the pasta and all the glorious Luca bread I ate, right?!

Yoga outside the studio can be fun, challenging, community-building, and an all around cool experience. Keep your eyes open for more such events like Alicia’s Yoga and Brunch series at Dante Next Door and Inner Bliss’ Believe in CLE event at the Rock Hall. And for my thoughts on other outside-the-studio yoga:

Where have you practiced outside the studio? And what did you think of it?

  1. I just tried North Coast Namaste this week and am looking forward to trying more yoga outside the studio! I’m so bummed I didn’t know about the yoga at the ballpark.
